The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 turned an extraordinary engineering target into a production car in 2005. Combining a sixteen-cylinder engine with four turbochargers and all-wheel drive, it paired immense performance with the comfort and finish expected of a luxury grand tourer.

Engineering beyond the engine

Reaching more than 400 km/h required much more than horsepower. Cooling, tyre performance, aerodynamic balance and transmission durability all had to work together. The Veyron uses changing ride height and an adjustable rear wing to suit different driving conditions. Its Speed Key prepares the car for its maximum-speed configuration.

The Veyron family

The original 16.4 established the foundation for the open-top Grand Sport and the more powerful Super Sport. The Grand Sport Vitesse subsequently combined the roadster body with the higher-output powertrain. Those versions have different performance figures; the table above describes the original 1,001 PS car.

Bugatti completed 450 Veyrons across the entire family before the programme ended in 2015. That total covers the different coupé and roadster versions, rather than 450 identical examples of the original car.
