The 2007 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition sharpened the SLR formula with extra power and a more focused chassis. This profile covers the road-going coupe associated with the 2007 model year. Mercedes-Benz announced the edition in July 2006, so its launch date and model-year label should not be confused.

What changed for the 722 Edition?

Mercedes-Benz paired the stronger engine with firmer dampers, a 10 mm lower ride height and 19-inch wheels. A revised front splitter and rear diffuser also improved its aerodynamic package. Together, these changes gave the edition a clearer performance focus than a cosmetic special.

Why the number 722 matters

The name honours Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson’s 1955 Mille Miglia victory in the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR. Their race number, 722, represented a 7:22 a.m. start. It is a reference to that achievement, not an engine output or a production total.

A Mercedes-Benz and McLaren collaboration

The SLR grew from the partnership between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren. Carbon-fibre construction and ceramic brakes connected the road car to the companies’ competition expertise. Meanwhile, its long nose and side exhausts gave it a distinctive identity within the supercar field.

The wider family later included a Roadster, a 722 S open-top edition and the uncompromising Stirling Moss model. In contrast, the 722 GT was a racing version without road approval. Those names are related, but their specifications should remain separate.

For another perspective on McLaren’s road-car engineering, explore the 2018 McLaren Senna. The comparison highlights how different the aims of two performance cars can be, even when they share a connection to McLaren.
