The 2010 Porsche 918 Spyder Concept introduced a new idea for a flagship sports car: combining high performance with plug-in hybrid drive. Porsche presented the study at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010. It then approved a production programme later that year.

Why the concept mattered
A hybrid system can do more than save fuel. Electric motors respond quickly, so they can support acceleration as the petrol engine builds power. They also recover energy during braking, ready to use it again.
For a sports car, the challenge is making those systems work together. Extra components add mass and complexity. Engineers must balance those costs against the benefits in traction, response and energy use. The 918 project made that balance central to its identity.
From Geneva concept to production car
The 2010 Porsche 918 Spyder Concept led to the production 918 Spyder in 2013. The finished car used a 4.6-litre V8 and two electric motors, with a combined output of 887 PS.
Those figures describe the later road car. They must not be presented as the specifications of the original Geneva study. Our separate 2013 Porsche 918 Spyder guide covers the production model.
How to compare concept and production specifications
A concept shows the direction of a project. Its published targets can change as engineers complete testing, prepare manufacturing and meet road-approval requirements. A production specification describes the car customers could actually buy.
For that reason, check the date and model stage whenever comparing the 918 with another hybrid supercar. A Geneva concept claim, a later prototype result and a final road-car figure answer different questions.
Frequently asked questions
Was the 2010 Porsche 918 Spyder sold to customers?
No. The 2010 car was a concept. Customer production followed in 2013.
How many production 918 Spyders were built?
Porsche completed 918 customer cars.
Is this the same model as the production 918 Spyder?
It is the concept that led to it. The two stages share a name and a basic idea, but their specifications should remain separate.
