The 2019 BMW 8 Series Coupe brought the 8 Series name into a new generation of luxury grand touring. Known internally as G15, the two-door model reached the market in November 2018. Its global launch range paired the petrol M850i xDrive with the diesel 840d xDrive.

Performance and long-distance comfort

Adaptive M suspension and Integral Active Steering formed part of the launch specification. The cabin combined a digital instrument display with two rear seats and a 420-litre boot. As a result, the design brief extended beyond straight-line acceleration to include everyday usability.

The two engines also give readers a useful way to understand the range. Start with the exact badge, then compare power, torque and acceleration together. A single specification labelled simply “8 Series” can easily obscure which version it describes.

Understanding the model names

The M850i is an M Performance model; its badge should not be shortened to M8. Likewise, this article concerns the Coupe. Convertible and Gran Coupe specifications belong in their own profiles.

For a different approach to a powerful luxury coupe, see the 2007 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 Edition. It provides a useful historical contrast, rather than a direct model-for-model comparison.
